Dyslexia Awareness Day

Sunday is Dyslexia Awareness Day

To mark Dyslexia Awareness Day, Alicia recorded a podcast with Special Educational Needs teacher, Deborah Lovill. We have summarised a few of her tips for parents of children with dyslexia. Though it is extremely common, some children & teens still feel ashamed or embarrassed when they discover they have dyslexia. Sitting in class watching your classmates manage the work whilst you are struggling can be difficult for anybody’s self-esteem. Here’s what you can do to support them.

Top Tips For Parents:

  1. Practise reading with your child as much as possible. You can also practise shared reading, where they read a paragraph and then you read the next. Another effective technique is familiar reading. If your child has a favourite book, get them to read it frequently so they can develop fluency. Barrington Stokes are books for children and young people of all ages with dyslexia.
  2. Do as much spelling and writing with them as possible. Deborah, recommends the 100 high frequency word list for this. This is a list of common words. If they can spell these words it can make a massive difference to their writing.
  3. Encourage your child to write the shopping list, family post-it notes or engage in story writing. This can help them gather fluency and meaning in their writing. Don’t correct all of their work, they do not need to see lots of red marks across the paper. Instead, if they’ve spelt a word wrong, tick all the letters they’ve got correct and then ask them to think about what the other letter could be.
